The Main Thing

The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. -Anonymous

The rascal Nasrudin stood on the bow of a boat next to a pompous intellectual who began to quiz him on his education. “Have you ever studied astronomy?” asked the professor.

“I can’t say that I have,” answered the mystic.

“Then you have wasted much of your life. By knowing the constellations, a skilled captain can navigate a boat around the entire globe.” Then he asked, “Have you studied meteorology?”

“No,” answered Nasrudin.

“Then you have wasted most of your life,” the academician chided. “Methodically capturing the Read the rest of this entry »

Midlife Transition: learning to live with the shadow

Dr. Toni La Motta

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what makes midlife so unique and challenging for so many people and I’m coming to see that it is the time in our lives when we most have to deal with our shadow self. Up to that point, many of us have ignored it, or lived through it! – but at midlife, we begin to question what to throw away and what to keep. We are confronted with the parts of our lives that haven’t lived up to our expectation and we sometimes think things will never change – ‘we are the way we are’. It’s at times like this that I am reminded of a Read the rest of this entry »

Your Soul at Work – an Excerpt

Dr. Toni La Motta

Addressed with the right mindset, the following are stages of personal growth. The movement through the stages is a progression. As we pass from one stage to the next, often with some difficult periods of transition, we learn and mature in the process. If we acknowledge and work through the issues of each successive stage, we become better human and spiritual beings.

The following stages carry us from our late teens to post retirement. The ages shown for each stage are only rough estimates. People may pass through the stages several years earlier or later than the estimates shown. Individuals vary widely Read the rest of this entry »

Follow Your SOUL to Avoid Midlife Crisis

Dr. Toni La Motta

‘Tis the Set of the Sail — or — One Ship Sails East

Ella Wheeler Wilcox 1916

But to every mind there openeth,
A way, and way, and away,
A high soul climbs the highway,
And the low soul gropes the low,
And in between on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.

But to every man there openeth,
A high way and a low,
And every mind decideth,
The way his soul shall go.

One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
‘Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.

Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
‘Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.
